What is Primary Care?

Connected and consistent

Primary care is your main place for everyday health care.

It’s where you go for regular check ups or ongoing health concerns that are not an emergency.

Benefits of a family doctor or nurse practitioner

  • A relationship with a provider who knows you.
  • Access to consistent care closer to home.
  • Regular checkups, immunizations & healthcare guidance.
  • Support with referrals to specialists.
  • Prescription refills and monitoring.
  • Early detection & preventative care.

What is a nurse practitioner? How they can provide comprehensive primary care?

  • Both doctors and nurse practitioners (NPs) are qualified primary care professionals who have the skills and knowledge to assess your health, diagnose and treat many conditions, order tests, prescribe most medications, and provide ongoing care.
  • NPs in Ontario are registered nurses with advanced education and clinical training that allows them to perform many of the same services as family doctors.
  • While there are a few procedures and specialist services that only doctors can provide, NPs are fully capable of managing most everyday health concerns, chronic conditions, preventive care, and health screenings.
  • No matter who your primary care provider is, you will receive safe, high-quality, patient-centred care that is matched to your specific needs and situation.
