The Central West Ontario Health Team (CW OHT) is proud to welcome Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) as its newest partner, marking a significant step forward in strengthening the integration of academic expertise, health innovation, and community-based care in the region.
TMU is a dynamic university positioned to support healthcare provider recruitment, expand access, and transform healthcare delivery in the region. Particularly, the School of Medicine located in Brampton trains learners with a focus on equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and community-centered care.
“TMU’s nationally recognized strengths in research, health education, and equity-focused programming are a strong complement to the CW OHT’s mission to deliver accessible, coordinated, culturally responsive care for our rapidly growing and diverse communities”, said Roberta Iannacito-Provenzano, Toronto Metropolitan University Provost and Vice-President, Academic. “We are proud to be a part of this important work, bringing much needed healthcare capacity to the region through TMU’s Integrated Health Centres by recruiting, training, and retaining interprofessional primary healthcare providers.”
The CW OHT is particularly looking forward to collaborating with TMU to increase healthcare capacity in the region by addressing key challenges, including inadequate access to interprofessional primary care, and high burden of chronic disease rates and physician shortages.
“This partnership will help drive our success towards improving access to primary care, and meeting the provincial goal of having 100% of the population attached to a primary care provider by 2029,” said Rishika Thakur Malhi, Executive Lead, CW OHT. “This collaboration opens the door to new opportunities for applied research, workforce development, and innovative models of care that respond to the evolving needs of our population.”
As part of this partnership, TMU will contribute to a range of initiatives including health equity research, community engagement, and the training and development of future healthcare professionals. The shared goal is to build a stronger, more inclusive health system that is informed by lived experience, community voices, and evidence-based practices.
With this new partnership, CW OHT now includes 28 partner organizations across health, social services, education, and community sectors—all working collaboratively to advance integrated care and population health.
